We tell ourselves it's the view we're after. The coast. The city we've read about for years. But stand in any of those places, and the truth arrives softly: it was never the scenery that moved you. It was the older man who waved you into his lifelong kitchen speaking a language you couldn't speak and somehow understood anyway. It is the sense of belonging to something larger, than your own small life.

But the why—the reason your heart wanted to go in the first place—only you know. It has to be understood. And understanding a person still asks for another person. It always has.
